I have been asked on several occasions why when I put two chequers together do I get Bars - The answer is quite simple in exactly the same way as the sex linked colour gene EACH BIRD carries two pattern  genes - Yes EACH BIRD - As you by now all know with the sex linked colour gene the cocks carries two genes but the hen only one this is the only gene where this happens so now we have two genes in each bird that can affect the pattern. In the same way as the pattern gene there is an order of dominance which is natures way of making sure that the most dominant pattern gene (‘T’ Chequer) does not appear in every bird. You did notice that I said the ‘T’ Chequer gene was the most dominant pattern gene - I know I have said it before but it’s worth repeating the Spread gene is not a pattern gene. As before in the order of dominance a bird can go down the stairs but not up the stairs so in other words two barless pigeons can produce nothing else but barless but a ‘T’ Chequer can produce any of the patterns if they are carrying it. The bird itself will be the pattern of the most dominant gene that he//she carries

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The main four pattern genes that I am going to discuss are those shown in Bold - The other two are recent additions to the gene pool and as they are only really degrees of chequering I wouldn’t get yourself to involved with these until you have understood the principle of how the pattern genes work. By now you should all be familiar with the Punnett square well you can use this in exactly the same way for pattern genes as you did for the colour genes. Just from looking at the order of dominance you can see that two bars can produce nothing but Bars and Barless - Chequers can produce Chequers, Bars and Barless and ‘T’ Chequers can produce anything to do with patterns. ‘T’ Chequers used to be referred to a Velvets. Like all things to do with genetics it’s is important to understand the genetic make up of your pigeon before you start - If you don’t you can quickly work it out from the offspring that he or she produces.
