Thanks Dave-it makes sense....except I have never bred off a bird showing this visible fault, and have never even kept one in the breeding loft so a cross tread is out of the question. If it is genetic as opposed to environmental (and I am certain it is as the fault is always present when the last flight unfolds in the nest) then it would appear not to be this dominanat gene but something else? Is there any recessive silky type gene out there? Has anyone else seen this fault in their stock? As I said, I saw it in Jones & Balchin birds, and knowing how popular they have been, I would be amazed if more of this gene was not out there.
