Hi Paul – I have deliberately not responded to your question hoping some one else that has been flying West’s would take up the challenge – My experience in flying West’s goes back 45 years when I would fly them every weekend – On the Thursday and Friday and during the weekend I would only feed then Wheat, Barley and Oats and I would get a good 10 hours out of the birds performing all the time. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I would feed them Beans, Peas and Maize and I found if they did go out on these days they would be much laboured and not fly or perform half as well so therefore I have always believed it is what you feed them that helps them fly and perform. I now only keep my birds for showing since I came back into the hobby 10+ years ago after a long absence. It would be nice to hear others experiences and if they have West’s that perform when flown out. I do know fanciers are putting other breeds into their birds so I am not surprised that the performing part is being bred out of the West.
