Dave - The answer to your problem is quite simple. Recessive Red is a solid red colour but with ash red you will see a lightening of the secondary feathers - This is known as the 'mark of the Ash' - It's the same with the Ash Yellow if you look closely at the Ash Yellow. It is unusual to find a bald head rtecessive red as when the birds carry the piebald gene and are recessive red they tend to be what we call the spangle (Spangles are Recessive Reds). If you do have a recessive Red then quite often it will be a badge and not a bald head. Not to be confussed in America they do breed solid coloured Wests and therefore it is not uncommon to have a Solid coloured Recessive Red. I did find one on a web site and i will see if i can find it again and email you but in the meantime i hope i have answered your query without confussing you too much Regards Dave
